That's not just a fan remake, it's the official real deal. In a rare turn of events, the original creators still own the rights to the content (though not the trademark), so this game is released under the GPL and Creative Commons as "The Ur-Quan Masters". The Wikipedia page is very detailed and there's a GDC video on it too. The original track title was 'star control2,tune2'. Note that in Star Control 2, time passes in regular space, hyperspace and quasispace, but not during menu manipulation, planet landings, conversations or fights.

You can interact with aliens, mine resources to make money to upgrade your fleet, and partake in space combat. It's an absolutely huge game for 1992, with almost 4000 unique planets to explore.
This space combat and adventure-RPG hybrid is usually on lists of best games ever made.
